Ceramic Artist in Residence 2006 - 2008
My time as a member of the Port Moody Arts Centre was special in many ways but my most favourite memory from my time there was when I named myself the ‘potter squatter’ and erected shelving for my own use in the hallway of the pottery studio. That cheeky act was accepted in return for work in the clay studio, which opened the door to me becoming an artist in residence, a post I held for two years.
In 1999 after leaving my job in the corporate world, I took a pottery class at a local high school. I was obsessed with clay immediately. I joined the Port Moody Art Centre Open Studio and devoured every class and technique I could, making me a proud self-taught potter. I began to sell my work at pottery sales and in a few shops and began to think of myself as a ‘real potter’. During my time at the arts centre, I volunteered at the Blackberry Gift shop and was the president of the shop for two years. I didn’t limit myself to the clay studio, I volunteered for many arts centre events and was also a founding member of the original Port Moody Film Society and served as president of that group as well. After becoming a Ceramic Artist united in Residence in 2006, I taught beginner classes, youth pottery and ran the youth pottery drop-in group.
