Ceramics Instructors (Advanced)

We are looking for a skilled and knowledgeable ceramics instructor with expertise in wheel-throwing and/or hand-building techniques to lead our advanced level classes. The successful candidate will bring a strong background in ceramics, a passion for teaching, and hands-on experience in a studio setting. This is a unique opportunity to shape the next generation of ceramic artists while working in a vibrant arts community.

About the PoMoArts

Established in 1998, PoMoArts, the Port Moody Arts Centre, is a not-for-profit organization that creates art experiences to engage, challenge, and awaken opportunities for connection. We provide art education, exhibitions, and community art experiences in the City of the Arts with various partners and artists each year. We are a busy Arts Centre that builds community through art and are looking to grow our collaborative team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver engaging and informative ceramics classes for advanced level adult students, focusing on wheel-throwing and/or hand-building techniques, glaze application, and firing processes
  • Share expert knowledge in ceramics that advanced students understanding skill and experience
  • Demonstrate a range of ceramic techniques, including surface design, slipping, sgraffito, and coil/slab construction, as well as wheel-throwing and hand-building, to provide a comprehensive and hands-on learning experience
  • Provide hands-on instruction and personalized guidance to students, fostering creativity, skill development, and confidence
  • Inspire and mentor students to explore and expand their artistic potential while making learning engaging and accessible
  • Undertake additional duties related to studio operations as required
  • Maintain a safe and organized studio environment, applying safety measures as required
  • Follow studio procedures in our professional & customer friendly environment

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in fine arts (Ceramics) or equivalent professional experience in the field
  • Minimum of 10 years hand-on ceramics experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience teaching ceramics to students of advanced & professional levels in a classroom or studio setting
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage students in a creative learning environment
  • Ability to adapt instruction to different learning styles
  • A passion for fostering creativity and community
  • Proven ability to follow studio safety procedures and create an inclusive learning environment
  • Experience with a variety of tools for ceramics, surface decoration techniques and/or a variety of texture techniques
  • Strong knowledge of working in a ceramics studio environment, including kiln operation, clay recycling, and equipment maintenance
  • Flexibility to work varying hours including weekends
  • Proficiency in ceramic chemistry and glaze formulation
  • Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 25kg

Assets

  • Experience with digital tools for ceramics, such as ceramic decal creation
  • Experience organizing student art showcases or exhibitions
  • Familiarity with alternative firing techniques (e.g., raku, wood firing, soda firing)
  • Membership in professional ceramics organizations or associations
  • Connections within the regional or national ceramics community, local or beyond
  • Additional spoken languages other than English

  • Compensation based on experience and qualifications. Starting at $45 – $50 per hour
