Artist Statement

Originally from Kamloops, B.C., Sarah Keppler relocated to the Vancouver region in 2013 to pursue her passion for the arts as an undergraduate student at Emily Carr University of art + design. As a Visual Arts major, her studies focused on drawing, painting, illustration, multi-media installations, art history and cultural theory. Upon graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, Sarah spent several years dedicated to her artistic practice, featuring her works in local galleries and coffee shops, as well as writing for art exhibitions. While renting a studio space in an artist collective, Sarah’s love for shared studio practice and engaging in dialogues around the arts sparked her considerations in teaching. She began teaching art classes in a community centre and enrolled in Simon Fraser University’s Professional Development Program to deepen her knowledge of art education. Sarah completed a Bachelor of Education with a concentration in Secondary, Visual Art and a minor in Curriculum and Instruction. She is also a member of the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation and took part in the Indigenous Perspectives Teachers Education Module. Weaving Indigenous principles and pedagogies throughout her lessons to build community, reciprocity, and respect for one another, the land and the peoples of this land is central to her teaching philosophies. Sarah strives to foster diverse, experiential learning opportunities that integrate land-based learning, discussions around the works of acclaimed historical and contemporary artists, and hands-on studio practice. Nurturing self-confidence, exploration and joy through art-making experiences that engage the mind, heart, body and spirit is Sarah’s passion and pursuit. She hopes that you join her in her journey as an art teacher and life-long learner to create, connect, and share meaningful learning experiences.

Sarah is grateful and honoured to live, work and play on the traditional and ancestral lands of the Kwikwetlem, Musqueam, Squamish, Stó:lō and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations.
