Born in Jiangsu in 1946, Gao Chen grew up in Shanghai, China. Chen at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Art before starting his art career as an art designer at Shanghai Museum of Arts and Crafts. Chen immigrated to Vancouver, Canada in 1989 and has since been working as a freelance painter. Chen has been the artist for Vancouver Artland Holdings Ltd. which consist of a collection of 20 landscape paintings for its flagship downtown building in 1991. From 1992 to 2011, his paintings have been collected by Vancouver business leaders and celebrities. Chen is known for his European classical painting style and has switched to the impressionist style since 2005. His paintings consist primarily of portraits and landscapes. Chen’s paintings are sincere and true to life, and show his poetic touch and his pursuit of an ideal life. The simplicity and brevity in his oil painting, his use of light and bright contrasting colors have made his paintings very popular. During Chen’s 26 years of painting career in Canada, he has created a supreme collection of modern paintings that have received broad acclaim both in Canada and China.

Artist Statement

Advocate a new realistic style of painting that combines classical realism and impressionism. My inspirations are from the masters of Manet, Cézanne, and Engro, I want to show the perfect combination of color, light and shadow, structure of the painting through still life paintings, and create intriguing paintings.
