Hello and welcome to my page, I am a Visual Artist

Olive Chan is a Chinese-Canadian landscape artist who works primarily in acrylics. For her, all of life is an expression of love; of being loved, being held by love, and of loving others. Nature, for her, is the ultimate Healing Garden. When she looks up at the sky, stands by the ocean, or sees a sunrise reflected in the river, the difficult and broken parts of herself feel accepted and something inside shifts toward wholeness. In her work, she aims to bring viewers to those quiet places of beauty where healing might be found. Olive's visual arts foundation was established through the fine arts program at her high school. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours in Theatre Set Design from York University in Toronto and has been painting for over 20 years, mostly as a hobby. She officially launched her art career at the beginning of 2020 and has been focusing on exploring skies and light. Olive lives in Port Coquitlam, BC with her husband, Tim, and their two elementary-aged daughters.

Artist Statement

Art, for Olive, is an attempt to convey to others that they are loved. She believes that knowing oneself as loved is the beginning of healing. With a focus on skies and landscapes and the interplay of light and dark, Olive hopes that her art can transport people into nature and create opportunities to pause and connect with that sense of being loved; to be reassured that it's all going to be okay. Through her work, she invites viewers to take a moment to breathe and to rest their souls a little. Olive's style can be considered Contemporary Realism. She strives to create paintings that resemble her reference photos and her limitations in imitating what she sees are what makes her "style." Working in layers, Olive typically uses a warm underpainting to bring depth to her pieces. She often also employs dry-brushing techniques to achieve a lightness to her clouds.
